Traction Boards

Traction boards are the simplest recovery tool there is: dig out a little, wedge a board under the tire, and drive out. No second vehicle, no winch, nobody to call. They work in sand, mud, snow, and loose rock, and for most people they are the first piece of recovery gear worth owning.

MAXTRAX invented the category in Australia and still makes the strongest case for buying once — the nylon is engineered to flex rather than snap, and the teeth grip your tire without shredding it. ARB's Tred Pro runs a similar design for less. Boards are bulky, so plan where they ride: traction board mounts put them on a rack or the spare tire.
