Two-Way Radios

A two-way radio is the only comms device on this site that does not depend on infrastructure — no towers, no satellites, no monthly bill. That is why it is still the first thing installed in a convoy rig, and why it keeps working when the cell booster has nothing to amplify.

We carry Midland GMRS and FRS radios, from the 50-watt MXT575 and MXT500 mobiles down to X-Talker handhelds, plus hand-crank NOAA weather radios for emergencies. GMRS requires an FCC license — no exam, covers your whole family, valid ten years. FRS radios need no license but are power-limited with fixed antennas.

Range is governed mostly by antenna height and line of sight, not wattage: a 15-watt set with a good antenna mounted high beats a 50-watt set with a bad one. Spend on the antenna.
