Skid Plates

Skid plates put a slab of steel or aluminum between the trail and the parts that end a trip — oil pan, transmission, transfer case, fuel tank, and catalytic converters. Steel takes repeated hard hits and slides over rock; aluminum saves roughly half the weight but gouges and bends sooner. Cat shields have become theft protection as much as trail armor.
