A pair of MAXTRAX MKII under the drive tires gets you moving again on your own — out of sand, mud or snow, with no winch, no anchor, no second vehicle. They are the original recovery board, made in Australia from reinforced engineering-grade nylon and backed for life. This is the Gunmetal Grey pair: dark and deliberately quiet on a modern truck.

Gunmetal Grey is the restrained one. It reads as part of a gray, black or gunmetal vehicle rather than an accessory bolted onto it, and it hides the dust film and scuffing that leave bright boards looking beaten after one season. The trade-off is real. For visibility this sits near the bottom of the MAXTRAX range, barely above Black. Dropped in a churned rut, in snow shadow, or anywhere after dark, they are genuinely hard to spot — which is where the Telltale leashes stop being optional.

Decide where they ride before you buy a mount. A roof rack is easy to reach on a low vehicle but adds height and wind noise, and it is a stretch on a tall rig. A bed rack is the fastest access and eats bed space. A spare-tire mount keeps them out of the way and the mud outside, if your carrier allows access behind the wheel. Inside is cleanest until they come back filthy and take the room. Also: boards get stolen off unattended racks, so price locking hardware, and check your stack height still clears the garage.

  • MKII is enough for most people. Step up to the XTREME only if you use boards hard and often — recovery work, driver training, racing.
  • Dark boards disappear. Gunmetal Grey hides dirt well and hides itself just as well — if you wheel alone or at night, clip the leashes on before the board goes under the tire.
  • Lifetime warranty, and we rarely see one come back. The failure we do see is bridging in very cold weather with a hard impact. MAXTRAX has always taken care of it.
  • It lands close to factory paint. Gunmetal Grey sits between Black and Titanium Grey, near Toyota Magnetic Gray and Ford Leadfoot.

Mounting these? One Universal Mounting Pin now fits the whole MAXTRAX range, which leaves two choices: thread length — 17 mm for bracket mounting, including every bracket we sell, or 40 mm to go through a camper panel — and capacity, a two-board pin for this pair on its own or a four-board pin if you run two sets.

More recovery gear and traction board mounts.

Stuck on which mount fits your rack? That is the question we field most, and it is easier to answer with the parts in front of us. We were MAXTRAX’s original U.S. distributor and have stocked the brand since it first came to the United States, and the full range lives in our warehouse in Prescott, Arizona rather than a drop-shipper’s. Tell us what you drive and what you are carrying it on.
