Sometimes the recovery point is behind a bumper, up inside a frame rail, or otherwise somewhere your hand and a standard shackle will not both fit. Sometimes you need to join two ropes and have nothing to join them with. Sometimes you are winching and you want more working load than a single shackle gives you.

The Double Loop is a soft shackle at roughly twice the length. Same HMPE core, same breaking strengths, just longer — and that length turns out to solve three different problems.

What the extra length buys you

  • Reach. Awkward, recessed or hard-to-access recovery points that a standard shackle cannot wrap.
  • Roughly twice the working load. Double it back on itself and you are pulling on two legs instead of one. Useful when winching.
  • Joining ropes. A clean way to connect two kinetic ropes or add a winch line extension without introducing a metal part into the middle of the system.

Pick your size

Same rule as everything else: size to the vehicle doing the recovery, not the one that is stuck.

Diameter Breaking strength Recovery vehicle weight Pairs with
5/16" 37,000 lbs 1,400 – 4,999 lbs 5/8" Viper, 3/4" Rubber Boa
7/16" 45,500 lbs 5,000 – 10,249 lbs 7/8" Python, 1" Rattler
1/2" 62,500 lbs 10,250 – 14,499 lbs 1-1/4" Mamba

Those breaking strengths look enormous next to the rope they attach to, and they should. The shackle is never meant to be the weak point in the system.

Do you need this or a standard shackle

Honest answer: most people should start with the standard soft shackle. It is shorter, cheaper, and handles the ordinary case of attaching a rope to a rated recovery point.

Buy the Double Loop when you already know you have a reach problem, or when you winch often enough that doubling for extra working load is genuinely useful to you. It is a second shackle in the bag rather than a replacement for the first.

Why soft over steel

Lighter, faster to rig one-handed, will not chip paint or powder coat, floats, and drops rather than flies if something fails. That last point is the one that matters when there are people standing around.

Steel still has a place — Green Pin bow shackles are cheaper and shrug off abrasion that would chew fiber. Most people end up carrying both.

FAQ

How do I use one?
Same as a standard soft shackle — pass the loop through the recovery point and over the knot. To double it, pass it through and back on itself before capturing the knot.

Does doubling it really double the strength?
Roughly. You are loading two legs instead of one, so working load goes up substantially, but the geometry of how you rig it matters. Do not treat it as an exact multiplier, and do not use it to justify undersizing.

My recovery point is rough or sharp.
The Heavy Duty soft shackle has a urethane dipped sleeve built for abrasion. It does not come in a double loop version, so if you need both length and abrasion resistance, talk to us.

When do I retire it?
Inspect before use. Cut or fuzzed fiber, a sleeve worn through, or glazing that suggests heat — any of those and it is done. A shackle is cheap relative to what it is holding.
