The Howl R1 is a 10-pound propane campfire that folds to the size of a shoebox and puts up a 32-inch flame. That combination is the whole point. Most portable fire pits are either small and underwhelming or big enough to be a real fire and a nuisance to pack. The R1 is the size of a lunchbox when it's closed and, open, the tallest flame in its class.
The flame comes from Howl's A-Flame burner: 160 micro-emitters under a FlexDome windscreen that keeps the fire exposed and standing up in wind instead of trapped in a bowl. Because the fuel becomes light rather than heat, it is efficient. At full blast a 20 lb tank runs eight hours; turned down, it goes much longer, and it will run from a 10 or 11 lb bottle if that's what fits your setup. GullWing legs fold flat, the body is 304 stainless with aircraft aluminum and brass, and it is UL certified and designed to comply with Stage I and Stage II fire restrictions. Confirm current restrictions with the local land manager; they change by forest and by week. Built in Colorado.
The honest limit is that the R1 is a flame, not a heater. There is no radiant element, so on a cold night you get a campfire's light and the gathering point without a campfire's warmth. For light and company on most nights of the year, that is exactly what you want.
