A flat tow strap has no give. When you hit the end of it, the shock loads the recovery points, the frame, and the person at the wheel. A kinetic rope stretches — up to 30% — and gives that load somewhere to go. That stretch is the whole point, and it is why a rope will pull out a vehicle a strap cannot.

The Viper is the 5/8" rope, sized for the lightest recovery rigs. Side-by-sides, UTVs, ATVs and small SUVs — roughly 1,400 to 2,999 lbs. If your SXS is doing the pulling, this is your rope.

Sizing this correctly matters

The one thing people get wrong: you size the rope to the vehicle doing the pulling, not the vehicle that is stuck. Taking your SXS out to help a bigger rig? You still want the 5/8" Viper. Undersize the rope and you shock-load it past its design; oversize it and it will not stretch enough to do anything useful.

Recovery vehicle weight 1,400 – 2,999 lbs
Minimum breaking strength 14,800 lbs
Working load limit 2,960 – 4,933 lbs, depending on safety factor
Diameter 5/8"
Construction Double braid nylon, polymeric coating, rubber-dipped eyes
Origin Made in USA
Warranty 1 year limited, through Yankum

Color options are available on the 30' length only. The 20' comes in Yankum Red.

Understanding the rating

Minimum breaking strength is where the rope fails, not where you should work it. Divide by a safety factor to get your working load:

  • 14,800 ÷ 3 = 4,933 lbs — aggressive, for people who know what they are doing
  • 14,800 ÷ 4 = 3,700 lbs — sensible middle ground
  • 14,800 ÷ 5 = 2,960 lbs — conservative, and what we would suggest if you are newer to this

Which length

20' for tight terrain — dense woods, rock, anywhere you cannot get the vehicles far apart. 30' for open country, desert, sand and dunes. More length means more rope to stretch, which means a gentler pull. If you only buy one and you have the room, buy the 30'.

How to use it without hurting anyone

Start with a slow pull to take up the slack, then build speed gradually. Do not exceed 5 mph. If you have reached 5 mph and nothing has moved, stop and rethink the recovery — dig, use boards, change the angle, run a winch. Repeatedly hammering a stuck vehicle is how equipment fails and people get hurt.

Rig to rated recovery points only. Never a hitch ball, never an unrated tow hook. On light rigs, factory tie-down points are often not rated for recovery loads — check before you pull. Lay a dampener over the rope. Keep everyone well clear of the line.

What to pair with it

  • Soft shackle: 5/16"
  • Hard shackle: 1/2"
  • Storage bag: X-small
  • Chafe sleeve: worth it if you ever run the rope over a rock or a bumper edge

FAQ

Can I use this as a tow rope?
No. Kinetic ropes are for recovery, not towing. Towing on a rope that stretches is unpredictable and unsafe.

How do I store it?
Out of the sun, away from fuel and solvents. The polymeric coating handles UV and water well, but nylon does not like harsh chemicals.

How long does a rope last?
There is no hour meter on it. Inspect before every use — look for glazing, cuts, stiffness, or a section that has gone noticeably thinner. If you are unsure about a rope, retire it. It is cheaper than the alternative.
