A flat tow strap has no give. When you hit the end of it, the shock loads the recovery points and the machine. A kinetic rope stretches — up to 30% — and gives that load somewhere to go. That stretch is the whole point, and it is why a rope will free a buried quad that a strap only jerks.

The Racer is the 1/2" rope, our smallest. ATVs, quads, side-by-sides and small boat trailers — anything from about 700 to 1,399 lbs.

Sizing this correctly matters

The one thing people get wrong: you size the rope to the vehicle doing the pulling, not the vehicle that is stuck. Taking your quad out to free a buried buddy? You size to your quad, not his. Undersize it and you shock-load the rope past its design; oversize it and it will not stretch enough to do anything useful.

Recovery vehicle weight 700 – 1,399 lbs
Minimum breaking strength 7,000 lbs
Working load limit 1,400 – 2,333 lbs, depending on safety factor
Diameter 1/2"
Construction Double braid nylon, polymeric coating, rubber-dipped eyes
Origin Made in USA
Warranty 1 year limited, through Yankum

Color options are available on the 30' length only. The 20' comes in Yankum Red.

Understanding the rating

Minimum breaking strength is where the rope fails, not where you should work it. Divide by a safety factor to get your working load:

  • 7,000 ÷ 3 = 2,333 lbs — aggressive, for people who know what they are doing
  • 7,000 ÷ 4 = 1,750 lbs — sensible middle ground
  • 7,000 ÷ 5 = 1,400 lbs — conservative, and what we would suggest if you are newer to this

Which length

20' for tight terrain — dense woods, rock, tight trails where you cannot get the machines far apart. 30' for open desert, dunes and sand. More length means more rope to stretch, which means a gentler pull.

How to use it without hurting anyone

Start with a slow pull to take up the slack, then build speed gradually. Do not exceed 5 mph. If you have reached 5 mph and nothing has moved, stop and rethink the recovery — dig, change the angle, use boards. Repeatedly hammering a stuck machine is how equipment fails and people get hurt.

Rig to rated recovery points only. Never a hitch ball, never an unrated tab. Lay a dampener over the rope. Keep everyone well clear of the line.

What to pair with it

  • Soft shackle: 1/4"
  • Hard shackle: 1/2"
  • Chafe sleeve: worth it if you ever run the rope over a rock or a trailer edge

FAQ

Can I use this as a tow rope?
No. Kinetic ropes are for recovery, not towing. Towing on a rope that stretches is unpredictable and unsafe.

How do I store it?
Out of the sun, away from fuel and solvents. The polymeric coating handles UV and water well, but nylon does not like harsh chemicals.

How long does a rope last?
There is no hour meter on it. Inspect before every use — look for glazing, cuts, stiffness, or a section that has gone noticeably thinner. If you are unsure about a rope, retire it.
