Stealth Folding MAXTRAX Mount | Pins Fold Flat

Every MAXTRAX mount on the market leaves you with the same problem. You take the boards off, and the mounting pins are still standing straight up in the air. Four steel posts on your roof, doing nothing, catching wind, whistling at 70, baking in the sun, and stopping you getting into the parking garage.

We built this because we got tired of unbolting our brackets before every airport run. The Stealth Folding Mount is the same idea as every other MAXTRAX bracket, except the pins lie down. No tools. Pull the boards, flip the pins flat, drive into the garage.

Will it fit my rack?

Yes. The only question is which configuration you run — and both of them fold the pins flat. That is the part people get wrong, so let us be precise about it.

Only the bottom four rows differ. Everything you bought this for is in both columns. Raised is not a downgrade — it still folds the pins flat, just not below the rack.

The one thing to understand

The board is the fixed part, not the bracket. MAXTRAX MKII and XTREME have a mounting hole pattern of 890 mm (35.04") front-to-back and 270 mm (10.63") across. That never changes.

So each bracket carries one end of the board — its two arms are permanently 10.63" apart because that is what the board demands. You get two brackets in the box because a board has two ends. Your crossbars are what has to accommodate the 35".

The slot grid in the centre of each bracket is the only adjustment on the whole assembly, and it gives you 3" of travel either way, per bracket. Two brackets, so 6" of slack against that fixed 35" target.

Two measurements

1. Crossbar spacing, centre to centre. Anywhere from 29" to 41" works. 35" is dead centre and needs no slot offset at all.

2. Crossbar width. 7" or narrower and you can run flush. Wider than that, run raised.

Then check you have 4.75" of open space for the pins to fold down into — that is the 3" Universal pin plus 1.75" of folding mechanism. The pins can fold inboard or outboard, and you can even mix directions, so use whichever side has the room. If neither does, run raised.

Board compatibility

Works with MAXTRAX MKII, MAXTRAX XTREME, MAXTRAX LITE and MAXTRAX Mini. The Universal Mounting Pins carry one or two sets.

Honest note on other brands: the bracket itself will hold ActionTrax and TRED PRO boards, but the included MAXTRAX pins will not. You will need to source pins from those manufacturers.

FAQ

Does folding the pins actually help with wind noise?
Yes. Exposed mounting pins are one of the biggest causes of roof rack whistle — air trips over them at speed. Fold them flat and the drag and the noise go with them. This is the reason it works as well on a daily driver as on a build.

Can I lock the boards?
The MAXTRAX pins take a TSA-style padlock through the top. If theft is a real concern where you park, take the boards inside — it takes seconds.

Which way do the pins fold?
Whichever way you need. Reverse the L-bracket and hardware to fold them inboard or outboard, and you can mix directions across the two brackets if your rack is awkward. Watch the washer order when you do: Belleville spring under the hex bolt, nylon washer in the middle, standard washer and nylock on the outside. Set the tension so a pin moves with one hand but does not flop.

Do I need to re-torque it?
Check the fasteners after your first extended run off-road. Two fasteners minimum per bracket.
