Mountain Hatch's Tailgate Table for the 1991-1997 Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series, and the Lexus LX 450 that shares its body, replaces the factory carpeted tailgate surface with a 1/2-inch food-grade HDPE panel. The carpet on an 80 is usually the first thing to go; this is the answer that also makes the gate a prep counter.

Pick flat or recessed. Go recessed if you cook on the gate: that version molds in two drink holders and a shallow, 1/4-inch-deep tray for the small things that otherwise roll away. Go flat if you would rather have every square inch available as cutting and work surface. Mountain Hatch offers new fasteners with the panel for 80 Series builds where the originals are tired. Each panel is made to order in Riverside, California: the outline is machine-cut, then the edges and pockets are finished by hand, so allow production time.

Set expectations before you buy. The surface is textured HDPE, which means it will take knife marks like a kitchen board and is slick when wet. The panel is not structural, so it protects the tailgate skin without reinforcing it. And the added weight lets the factory damper open the gate a touch faster than stock, though, as Mountain Hatch notes, it will not slam open.
