The only roto-molded fuel container CARB will certify

Plenty of gas cans carry a CARB certificate. RotoPax is the only rotationally moulded one — every other certified container on the market is blow- or injection-moulded, which is a cheaper process and a thinner, less impact-tolerant wall.

Roto-moulding a container that still passes CARB's permeability limit is hard, and RotoPax does it with a patented three-layer process: a specially formulated barrier material sandwiched into the wall to stop fuel vapour migrating through the plastic. That's what lets them hold a CARB Executive Order while being thick enough to mount on the outside of a vehicle and take abuse.

Inside the neck you'll find a white tube — the Flame Mitigation Device. It's a legally required safety component that prevents flame jetting. Do not remove it; doing so voids the warranty.

Mounting

The RotoPax locking pattern is effectively an industry standard, and that's the real reason to buy into the system. Beyond RotoPax's own Standard, DLX and LOX Pack Mounts, dozens of manufacturers build brackets to it — including our own Heavy-Duty RotoPax Spare Tire Mount, plus adapters from Front Runner, Eezi-Awn, Leitner, Axia Alloys, Xtrusion, TrailRax and RockSlide. Whatever rack or bumper you run, a RotoPax bracket exists for it.

  • Standard Pack Mount — single T-handle
  • DLX Pack Mount — twin arms, more clamping force. Use this one if you're stacking.
  • LOX Pack Mount — twin arms plus a lock cylinder. Not compatible with extensions.

You can stack a maximum of two containers. The extension you need is determined by the bottom can, not the top one.

Venting — read this before your first trip

RotoPax containers must be vented regularly. Fuel expands and contracts, and a sealed container will balloon or collapse. Vent at least once a day, and again for every 10°F of temperature change or every 1,000 ft of elevation gain. Failing to vent will deform the container and voids the fuel-container warranty.

Pro tip from RotoPax: store the container either completely full or completely empty. A quarter-full can holds the most vapour and expands the hardest.
