Sterling Power AB12210 — 12V / 210A Alternator to Battery Charger
The Sterling Power AB12210 sits at the top of the mid-range AB series — a marine-grade alternator to battery charger delivering full 4-stage charging to your house bank at up to 210A input. It's designed for 12V systems with high-output alternators, twin alternator setups, or any application where the AB12130 doesn't have quite enough headroom. Large house banks on expedition vehicles, commercial fishing vessels, and long-range cruisers are the natural home for this unit.
The AB series works by placing a controlled load on the alternator, pulling its voltage down to a high-current, low-voltage state, then amplifying that power into a proper bulk, absorption, float, and equalization charge cycle at the output. The result is house bank charging up to five times faster than a standard alternator connection, with correct charge voltages that fully condition battery plates and extend battery life. No alternator modification is required and no ECU interference occurs during installation. Multiple alternators can be fed to the input simultaneously — the AB12210 can handle up to 210A total from any combination of alternators.
The AB12210 includes an internal split charge system that maintains a maintenance charge on the starter battery while dedicating full 4-stage charging to the house bank. It supports AGM, gel, flooded lead acid, and LiFePO4 chemistries, with built-in alternator and battery temperature sensing that automatically reduces output if the alternator approaches thermal limits. An optional remote control (ABRC) is available separately for full monitoring and setup capability.
Important compatibility note: The AB series is not recommended for modern European or Japanese vehicles equipped with Euro 5/6+ regenerative braking or integrated engine management systems. For those applications, Sterling's Battery to Battery (BB) Saturn series is the correct choice. The AB12210 is well suited to traditional American vehicles, marine engines, and commercial equipment with conventional 12V alternator systems.
Key Specs:
- Input voltage: 12V DC
- Maximum input current: 210A
- Compatible battery types: AGM, gel, flooded lead acid, LiFePO4
- Temperature sensing: alternator and battery
- Multiple alternator inputs supported
- Optional remote control: ABRC (sold separately)
Not recommended for use with lithium batteries without an external current limiter. The AB series is not current limiting — for lithium installs, Sterling's BB Saturn series DC-DC chargers are the recommended solution.
